Eating pizza from a bar with batting cages, appropriately named Home Plate, out in Marana, and I like it.
We are nine weeks into 52 Weeks of Pizza and week 9 I find myself at a place that does not specialize in pizza. Why would I would do that? Well, here’s the thing, all pizza deserves a chance. Also, as we are nearing the end of February, we get even closer to this thing called March Madness. In Tucson, there are no professional sports teams, and the whole community gets behind Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball. If we’re not watching the game in person, we’re certainly at a sports bar watching it along side other fans. This means our schedules pretty much revolve around game schedules. Thankfully when Home Plate serves good food and has great TVs for viewing. Uniquely, they also have batting cages. The west Marana location is fairly new, and the original can be found in east Tucson, and has been a long time bar staple.
Knowing the Home Plate’s menu is mostly burgers, dogs and sandwiches, pizza is not something that I would think to get, mostly because I tend to reserve my pizza eating for pizza-centric establishments. This seemed as good of time as any to give it a try. A caprese was on special. I do love a good deal too. Their pizzas range in price from $9.95-$14.95
Crust: Really liked the consistency and texture of this crust. It was nicely seasoned with garlic and a super light smattering of dried herbs. It was sturdy and a decent thickness when compared to toppings. Because it is thicker, I did find that it was more filling per slice.
Toppings: The toppings were minimal by nature on this pizza. The simplicity of the toppings was fantastic proportions were perfect. Fresh tomato and basil accompanied rich flavorful cheese with an olive oil and garlic sauce pulling everything together.
Sauce: Tangy. Bright. Rich tomato flavor.
Overall: 🍕🍕🍕 3/4 out of 5 slices
The pizza really offered up a surprising level of quality and flavor. The dough was homemade and hand stretched, and the flavor and texture was on point. Ingredients were all well balanced and in great ratios. I’d definitely order the pizza there again.
